Andrej Dúbravský
Andrej Dubravski, a young Slovakian artist, graduated from the Academy of Art and Design in Bratislava. He has held several solo exhibitions in Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and Germany. He has also held solo exhibitions abroad, including in Italy, France, and Brazil. His work is included in the collections of the Slovak National Museum, where he exhibited in 2015, and the DSC Gallery in Prague. He then moved to the United States for a long-term contract.
The artist's paintings are based on classical techniques, an even more classical attitude and an emphasis on feeling. One is sometimes tempted to call his work archaic. In his works, Dubravsky seems to express something that defies analysis, his own unique essence. In the past, this kind of expression was the central subject of painting.
His work is also informed by psychoanalytic theories and has an unmistakably sexual undertone: his paintings often feature male nudes in connection with nature, and for Andrei the classic bunny ears eventually transformed into devilish horns.
Dubravskiy does not only attract attention with his provocative ideas. What is fascinating is his rapid painting, which he does on raw canvas in a technique called alla prima. The colors are quickly injected into the picture plane, creating a special aquarium-like atmosphere. On the other hand, the images cannot be retouched later, but require meticulous preparation and sketching.
