Boris Sirka

Boris Šilka (born 1981 in Snina) studied under Professors Rudolf Sikora and Zbyněk Prokop at the Department of Graphic and Experimental Arts, Faculty of Arts, Technical University of Košice from 2000 to 2006. In 2003, he was recognized as a promising young talent by the Oskar Čepan Award. He currently lives and works in Bratislava.
In his current works, he has left behind stylized figurative paintings refined with calligraphy brushes, discarding unnecessary ornamentation and populist aesthetics, as well as bitter and clumsy humor, irony and touches of sexual tension. Anime inspiration, linearity and bright colors are no longer in his current works. His work has naturally evolved and become more conceptually refined and mature. Visual shock therapy has been replaced by gradually adding tension. The horror is no longer Central European B-horror, but Scandinavian cold and disturbing. The continuous unfolding of uncertainty and latent anxiety is similarly present in his audiovisual project Bios (collaboration with Jozef Tušan), where he processes the generated soundscapes. Boris Šilka prefers to work within clearly defined cycles and does not return after finishing them. He is noted for their formal features, but it is possible to clearly identify the author of the work.
