"Between images and music"

GUEST: Chikako Yamashiro (videographer/artist)

... Chikako Yamashiro is an artist who creates many video works based on physical performance. Music, including voices, sounds, and songs, has always played an important role in his works.

Daiho Soga is also an artist who continues to work with music and images through CINEMA dub MONKS and Tailor's Circus.

The two met in Okinawa and have been friends for a long time. Last year, we also started a project in which Soga improvised music to the video works of Tokyo University of the Arts students taught by Yamashiro.

What kind of existence are images and music? What is born between images and music? I think this will be a talk that gets to the core of the creations of these two artists.

"Edible Circus"

GUEST: Hiroko Horiguchi

...The Tailor's Circus is not only a stage performance, but also a daycare center for after-school children, a free school, a library (Circus Library), a public cafeteria (as proposed by past guest Tatsufumi Fujiwara (historian and associate professor at Kyoto University)), etc. The circus' leader, Daiho Soga, wants to explore ways to manage the circus.

It is another form of expression and work, a community art work, and a proposal to society... Through this movement, our members will grow, learn new things, and create new stage works and forms of expression, and we are exploring these possibilities.

In the process of searching, Soga recently happened to become involved in the issue of closing elementary and junior high schools in the area where he lives, and what is the relationship between school education, libraries, children, and the community? I am relearning this, going to various places in Japan to study, and am even thinking about starting a free school in my hometown.

This time, I came across an article in the midst of such a movement, ``Edible Schoolyard: An Edible Schoolyard'' in Berkeley, California, which was started with the suggestion and support of Alice Waters, a restaurant owner in Portland, USA. We invited Ms. Hiroko Horiguchi, representative of Edible School Garden, a public junior high school, to talk about food gardens, what is school, and what education is all about. Let's talk.

profile ... Hiroko Horiguchi (Edible Schoolyard Japan)

Born in Kanagawa Prefecture. After graduating from university, he worked at a planning and production company in advertising, magazines, and publishing, and then became a freelancer. While researching agriculture, food, and the people involved, he came across Edible Schoolyard. In 2006, “Edible Schoolyard” (Ie no Hikari Association) was published. In 2014, he established Edible Schoolyard Japan, a general incorporated association. In 2022, we will commission and operate the Edible KAYABAEN project in Kayabacho, Nihonbashi, Tokyo.

“What are expressions that evoke memories?”

GUEST: Yusuke Ishida (video artist)

One comment we often hear from people who have experienced a Tailor's Circus performance is that it reminded them of many things.

``Because it is an unorganized stage, it evokes the memories of the viewer and creates an experience unique to that person,'' said Yusuke Ishida, a filmmaker who recently completed the ``Tailor's Circus Film Project'', which he proposed in 2019. That's what I say.

Ishida, who says that a story was born by mixing up fragments of the actions and memories of people involved in the circus, and Daiho Soga, who has deliberately tried to put diverse elements on stage in an unorganized manner, will talk about the relationship between memory and expression. .

[4/20 (Sat) ~ 4/29 (Mon/Holiday) 10th anniversary project vol.1! “Exhibition of OUTTAKES” at Tokyo・FLYING GALLERY (Aquvii)】

This year, Tailor's Circus celebrates its 10th anniversary. As a token of our gratitude, in 2024 we will be delivering exhibitions, lectures, courses, and other projects derived from the past 10 years of activities throughout the year.

The first is the special exhibition “Exhibition of OUTTAKES”!

Yusuke Ishida (film director) and Gakuto Tano (videographer), who have worked on video works of the tailor's circus, have created the film ``What is the tailor's circus?'' We will be exhibiting video and sound works created from the question ``', combined with field recordings made by Soga, who runs a circus, around the world.

When I watch their performance, I feel like I have traveled far and wide. Even if you are watching the same program, just by changing your sitting position, the program will be different each time you watch it. Even though they were watching the same performance at the same time, different people develop impressions and feelings as if they were watching completely different things.

This is a new video work that has been re-edited and created using outtake footage that was created while producing video works related to these questions and feelings, as well as the tailor's circus.

We will also sell original goods such as circus coats, CDs, and books (you will also receive a mini poster!).

In addition, a circus university will be held during the event, including talk sessions with Daiho Soga (director and director of the Tailor's Circus) and special guests (there will also be time for live music by Soga), as well as screenings of Cut the Fish for two consecutive nights. Talk too! (Reservations required for both)

This is a 10-day outtake where you can fully experience the world of the tailor's circus.

We look forward to your visit.
